Contamination within pharmaceutical compounding facilities can arise from a number of sources, but most of it are traced from humans working in these areas. With normal movements, the human body sheds squamous cells at a rate of at least 106 per hour which pose increased risk of microbial contamination.

To reduce possible contamination, it is imperative that compounding personnel follow appropriate hand hygiene, garbing, and movement within compounding areas as first major steps. These actions do not totally eliminate all particles, but can decrease the particulate burden in the compounding environment.
